Journey's Deen Castronovo Talks "Revelation"

Here's a new August 2008 interview with Journey drummer Deen Castronovo. Deen talks here about Journey's runaway success that is their new "Revelation" CD. He gives some insight into the CD's inception, recording, and eventual release through Wal-Mart, which incidentally the band couldn't be happier with. Interesting note: Deen was a bit hoarse the day we chatted, as he revealed he and Journey guitarist Neal Schon took in a Slipknot concert the night before. Apparently, Deen's a big fan of the masked metal titans, and it turns out those guys have love for journey as well. Very cool. Journey's in the middle of a big summer tour with Heart and Cheap Trick - make sure you check out Journey online for tour dates at www.journeymusic.com, and do pick up the new cd/dvd package that is "Revelation". Author Sterling Whitaker Explains "The Grand Delusion"
Some time ago I received an e-mail from an author who had written a comprehensive biography of the band Styx. The author, Sterling Whitaker, had asked me if I'd like to check out the book titled "The Grand Delusion: The Unauthorized True Story of Styx". I love music related biographies, so I said sure. I was blown away by the material in this book. Sterling gives incredible insight into the inner workings of Styx through interviews with the band members, their inner circle (former managers, friends, record label types, etc.), and those that were there for the highs and lows of Styx's 30 plus year career. Sterling presents this information in an organized, readable fashion and does a great job with all the details. By the end of the book, you'll know more about Styx than you had ever hoped - maybe you'll even come away with added respect for the effort that it took to get this band to the top. In this new July 2008 interview I talk with Sterling about the book in detail. Take a listen and hear what he has to say about the treasure trove of Styx info that is this book. Thanks to Sterling for the chat - and pick up his book at www.thegranddelusion.com.

Meet Multifaceted Musician Hans York
Here's a brand new July 2008 interview with German born, Seattle based multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter Hans York. Hans has a new CD out titled "Young Amelia", which is a dazzling display of acoustic power. Hans favors open acoustic tunings, which make the guitar work on the CD sound all the more impressive. His music blends folk, jazz, pop, and even world music with a soothing vocal tone to create a masterful sound. Here Hans talks about his musical background (which is extensive), as well as the writing and recording of "Young Amelia". He also has an interesting story about studying music in Brazil, which led him for a time to become a soloist on fretless bass. From rock to classical to opera, Hans has toured behind it. His musical diversity is quite dizzying. Recently, Hans added another fete to his list of achievements - he is a winner in the New Folk category at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. Singer/Songwriter Dale Watson's Journey "From The Cradle To The Grave"
Here's a brand new May 2008 conversation with Texas singer/songwriter Dale Watson. Dale's music is in his own words "ameripolitan" - original music with a prominent roots influence. His latest record "From the Cradle to the Grave" will stir up images of classic country titans like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and George Jones. Incidentally, while writing and recording for the new CD, Dale spent some time in a Tennessee cabin once owned by Cash - soaking up some vibes. In this interview, Dale talks about the new CD, as well as his songwriting, musical influences, and his thoughts on life on the road. Dale's going to be performing in my neck of the woods at the Honesdale Roots and Rhythm Festival in Honesdale, PA in June. Anyone in the area - come check out Dale live, you won't be dissapointed. A Conversation With Chicago Bluesman Lurrie Bell
Here's a May 2008 interview with Chicago blues guitarist Lurrie Bell. Lurrie's done a few records with his late father in the past, which I ask him about. Lurrie also gives his thoughts on his latest CD "Let's Talk About Love" - which was actually nominated for a few Blues Music Awards recently. Lurrie's going to be appearing at the 2008 Pocono Blues Festival, which this interview was done in advance of. His brand of blues will get your foot tapping and won't let it stop. Here's a brand new May 2008 interview with the great Steve Lukather. This chat revolves around Steve's brand new solo record "Ever Changing Times" which is out now in most of the world and June 3rd in the U.S. In this interview I go in depth with Steve about the writing and recording of the record. He even filled me in on the cast of amazing players who lent their time - including guests like Bill Champlin and Joseph Williams. Steve's son Trevor was also a big part of the record - we talk about that as well. "Ever Changing Times" is a masterful melodic rock album that fans of Steve's work with Toto will appreciate, and his hardcore guitar audience will find something to take away from this as well. I also have the interview transcibed - due to a glitch with my digital recorder causing the audio to be a bit hot. Thanks to Steve for the chat, well as Dave at Rising Talent Group for makign this happen. Steve will beout on the road in '08 and beyond - check him out at www.stevelukather.net.

Talking Blues With Bobby Rush
Here's a May 2008 interview with bluesman Bobby Rush. This was done in advance of Bobby's appearance at this years Pocono Blues Festival, where Bobby will pull double duty - playing solo acoustic as well as with his band. This interview as you'll notice was totally off the cuff - I called Bobby to set up an interview time but it turned out he was ready to talk right then. I didn't have a whole lot prepared at that point, but it was fun to do something loose and frrform like this. Bobby was more than cordial, like talking to someone you'd known for years. We talked about his history in the blues, his current CD "Raw", his time on the legendary Chitlin Circuit, and his take on life (he's lovin' it by the way!) Bobby also just got back from performing for U.S. troops in Iraq and Kuwait, which he chats about as well. Thanks to Bobby for the cool interview - it's long one (over 35 minutes). Songwriting's The Key For Chris Gates
Here's a brand new April 2008 conversation with singer/songwriter Chris Gates. Chris at the moment has got a fantastic country flavored record out called "Ain't It Grand" with his Gatesville band - great production, just the right amount of twang, and plenty of raw passion. He's also got a solo acoustic CD and solo acoustic DVD which were recorded around his homebase of Austin, TX. Chris is currently working on some new music, which he talks about here. He also talks about writing for the "Ain't It Grand" CD, and his thoughts on songwriting in general. Other topics include his evolution as a musician in his early punk bands The Big Boys and Poison 13, to hard rock band Junkyard, to his current country/southern/acoustic efforts. Chris says that he hopes to have his new solo music out sometime this summer. Make sure you check his music out at www.chris-gates.com and www.myspace.com/bigchrisgatesampgatesville.

This collection of songs will either be paired with live tracks recorded at Philly's Electric Factory this past November, or the projects will be two separate entities altogether - it's yet to be determined. At the end, Rob talks about writing for the "Nervous Night" record in my homebase of The Poconos - I also asked Eric Bazilian about that in my last interview with him. Guitarist Rick Richards On The Georgia Satellites, Izzy Stradlin, and The Art Of Slide Guitar
Here's a February 2008 interview with guitarist Rick Richards of The Georgia Satellites. In this one Rick chats a bit about the Satellites past, and what it's like playing with the revamped lineup of the band these days. I also got to ask Rick about Izzy Stradlin - who Rick's been playing with for over 15 years now. RIck was a member of Izzy's Ju Ju Hounds, and has since remained playing guitar on Stradlin's solo records. I also got to ask Rick about his killer slide guitar playing, which in my opinion adds the perfect amount of kick to the Satellites and Izzy's records. This one was done specifically for a shorter magazine article, so it's not the most in-depth thing I've ever done, but it was cool to chat with one of southern rock's finest. If you ever get the chance to meet Rick, you'll see that he's a cool, laid-back character - and a good guy. Check out The Georgia Satellites - who still do plenty of touring - at www.thegeorgiasatellites.com.

In this interview Michael and I chat about his musical career - from his beginnings in Ohio to Damn Yankees and Skynyrd, and many sessions and tours in between. Fact: Michael has never played drums for Michael Bolton, which I mistakenly stated in my intro to the interview. As you'll hear, we got a laugh out of that one. Michael was a good sport. Another topic covered was Michael's artwork - he's a fantastic artist. He chats about his paintings and even how the rest of Lynyrd Skynyrd pulled up in the tour bus at one of his gallery shows. Thanks to Michael for the interview, he's truly one of the nicest musicians I've had the pleaseure of speaking with. Make it a point to check out Michael's art at www.michaelcartellone.com.

John Sebastian's "Satisfying" New Project
Here's a new January 2008 conversation with former Lovin' Spoonful leader John Sebastian. The main topic of this chat was the new CD John has out - a collaborative effort with mandolin wizard David Grisman titled "Satisfied". John talks about how the CD came about, what it was like working with Grisman, even the quirky ideas the pair had while brainstorming for the CD. John also talks about his feelings on songwriting, and even his thoughts on how the music of The Lovin' Spoonful has held up. Quite an interesting CD, "Satisfied" is full of acoustic flavors - from Grisman's mandolin to Sebastian's harmonica and guitar. Sebastian's voice in particular is able to stretch out in this performance. To hear samples of the CD, as well as learn about John Sebastian's long musical career - visit www.johnbsebastian.com.

Smash Palace Returns With "Everybody Comes and Goes"
Welcome to the first new Musician's Voice interview of 2008. It's a chat with one of my favorite musicians - Steve Butler of the band Smash Palace. I won't go into detail about the band's history - you can scroll down the page to an earlier interview I did with Steve that covers that. This chat is about the band's excellent new CD "Everybody Comes and Goes". Really, this album is highly recommended. If you like Beatle-esque pop with an edge, this is the band for you - actually, there's even a Beatles cover on this record. Steve talks here in detail about the writing, recording, and very cool artwork on "Everybody Comes and Goes". There's also a great story that Steve has about a hidden track on the new CD. Take a listen to the interview, then check out the band at www.smashpalacemusic.com. Thanks again to Steve for the chat - he's truly one of the nicest guys in music.

A Chat With Legendary Songwriter Jim Vallance
Here is a December 2007 interview with one of my all time favorite songwriters - Jim Vallance. If you're not familiar with his name, chances are you're familiar with his work. Jim's written most notably with artists like Bryan Adams and Aerosmith, but his collaborations have extended to bands/artists like Loverboy, Ozzy Osbourne, Glass TIger, Joan Jett, Ted Nugent, and so much more. Some of the big hits he's penned are Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" and "Heaven", Heart's "What About Love", and Joe Cocker's "When the Night Comes". Now that's impressive. In this interview we talk about Jim's beginnings in the business, the process of writing with other artists, the current state of songwtiting, as well as his recollections of working with some of these artists. It's almost 30 minutes of audio - Jim was most gracious to grant me a great conversation. Check out Jim's website after you listen to the interview at www.jimvallance.com. There you'll find a comprehensive list of songs Jim's helped create.

Chris Cornell Opens Up About "Carry On"
Here's a new November 2007 interview with Chris Cornell. Here Chris goes in depth about his latest solo CD "Carry On" - the writing, recording, inspiration, even talking about the studio musicians used on the record. Chris also talks about his current tour and selecting a setlist out of a catalog consisting of Soundgarden, Audioslave, and solo material. I only got in a few actual questions in my limited window with Chris (he had a full day of interviews), but his in depth answers and explanations more than make up for the number of questions I got in. Thanks to Chris for the chat - it was great to talk to one of the best rock vocalists of the last 20 years. Check out Chris online at www.chriscornell.com.

Drinking Some "Sloe Gin" With Joe Bonamassa
Here's a brand new October 2007 interview with blues guitar gunner Joe Bonamassa. In this one Joe chats about his new CD "Sloe Gin", and the process that went with recording it. Other topics include how Joe feels about being one of the "new guitar heroes", his current "Blues in the Schools" program, and touring with current road mates Sam Bush and Crosby Loggins (yes, the son of Kenny). I found Joe to be a cool, laid back interview subject, even after my cell phone cut out mid interview! Do yourself a favor and check out "Sloe Gin" - you won't be disappointed. In addition to Joe's guitar work and his original tracks on the CD, there are a few interesting choices of cover tunes (including Chris Whitley's "Ball Peen Hammer" and Bad Company's "Seagull"). Scott Bradoka - Instrumental Guitar Bliss
Scott Bradoka is one of those musicians who is able to capture your mind with an instrumental melody -and he does it well. Through several instrumental guitar CD's like 2003's "Create Your Own Reality", Scott has demonstrated his high caliber musicianship by not only making great music - but by creating sonic landscapes. The Bethlehem, PA based guitarist chats here in this new Sept. '07 interview about his musical past, his current projects, what is was like touring Germany opening for Jeff Beck, and of course - creating melody with six steel strings. Kevin Martin Speaks Out About The Reunited Candlebox
Here's a new August 2007 interview with Candlebox vocalist Kevin Martin (far right in photo). Kevin states in the interview that Candlebox is currently at work on a new CD, due early 2008 (he was on his way to a writing session when we spoke). Dave Meniketti - Still Flexing His Hard Rock Muscle With Y&T
Here is a brand new July 2007 interview with vocalist/guitarist Dave Meniketti of Y&T. He also talks about Y&T's scorching new DVD: "Live - One Hot Night". If you're a Y&T fan, or even if you're not, listen to this interview. Dave's a musician who's been there /done that and is a testament to perseverence in the fickle world of the music business. It was great to hear Dave's thoughts on music. Thanks for the chat Dave! Deep Purple According To Ian Gillan
Here's a brand new July 2007 interview with Ian Gillan. Unfortunately, I only had a limited window to chat with Ian, and due to my own stupidity actually called a few minutes late, which cut my time with him even more. But, I did get in a good chat with Ian - who was a warm, personable interview subject. He chats here about the current lineup of Deep Purple, his thoughts on the last few Purple studio records, as well as his own current "Gillan's Inn" album. Thanks to Ian for this one, and to Sarah the tour manager for hooking me up. Listen to the interview to hear a story about Purple drummer Ian Paice's feet! Eric Bazilian On The New Hooters CD, Touring Germany, And Even,,, The Poconos
Here's a brand new interview with Eric Bazilian of The Hooters. Eric chats about the making of the band's new CD "Time Stand Still", his thoughts about touring Germany - which the band will do this summer, and as the headline says, some talk about the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania. Explanation for the Pocono chatter: this interview will appear in article form in a Pocono area magazine this summer, so I had to ask Eric about his experiences in the area. Fact: Eric and Rob Hyman had writing sessions for Hooters CD "Nervous Night" in the Pocono area. That may not mean much unless you're from here, but I can relate. Anyway, check out the interview, then get the latest on The Hooters at www.hootersmusic.com

From The Archives... A Chat With The Hooters Bassist Fran Smith Jr.
Here's an archived interview with one of my favorite musicians, Fran Smith jr. of The Hooters. This interview was done in April of 2004 for NEPAToday.com as kind of a "get to know the artist" sort of thing. This was the first of a couple interviews I've done with Fran - who by the way just may be the most down to earth guy that's ever been a member of a world famous platinum selling band. I put this interview online now because The Hooters are set to release a new CD - "Time Stand Still" and will be touring Europe this summer. You should also know that Fran put out a great CD a couple of years ago called "Man Meets Machine" (see the Various Print Articles section of this site for an article I did on that record.) I hope to bring you some new interviews with members of The Hooters soon - but until then, here's Carlo Cannoli himself (listen to the interview for explanation), Fran Smith, Jr.

Michael Cloeren Doing His Part To Keep The Blues Alive
Here's a little something different for The Musician's Voice - a chat with a non-performer; someone behind the scenes. This interview is with Michael Cloeren, who's the founder and organizer of the annual Pocono Blues Festival in Blakeslee, PA. This is one of the country's premier blues festivals, drawing the genre's best artists every year. This year marks the 16th annual installment of the festival, and true to form it will be 3 days worth of nothing but the blues, be it delta, Chicago, or even a little zydeco thrown in. Michael, who's as close to a blues scholar as I've ever heard, also hosts a radio show in Northeast Pennsylvania that can also be heard on www.mountainofblues.com. Check out his show, and for more information on the Pocono Blues Festival visit www.jfbb.com.

The Many Hats Worn By Guitarist Paul Nelson
Paul Nelson is the kind of musician they call a guitarists guitarist. Musical diversity is what Paul is all about - from playing guitar with groundbreaking metal band Liege Lord, to studying fusion at Berklee with Steve Vai, to his current home as sideman to blues legend Johnny Winter. Paul's been there and done that musically. He's also written instructional columns, so listen up - you can learn a thing or two from the guy. Here Paul chats about his musical history, his present adventures with Johnny WInter, and even his future recording and tour plans. Did I mention he's also producing other artists? When he finds time to sleep, I don't know... Check Paul out after listening to the interview at www.paulnelsonguitar.com.

Jeff Pilson On Life In Foreigner, Making Music, And Surviving As A Working Musician
Jeff Pilson just may be one of the hardest working musicians in rock music. He was the bassist in Dokken for the better part of two decades, has an ongoing melodic rock band called War and Peace, and for the past couple of years has filled the bass slot in Foreigner. This is in addition to the many sessions and live gigs he's taken on over the years with artists like Dio and M.S.G. Here Jeff talks about his time thus far with Foreigner, the future of War and Peace, and also his wishes to do another album with ex-Dokken mate George Lynch. Thanks to Jeff for the chat - he's a true working pro in the music world. Visit his personal website at www.jeffpilson.com and Foreigner at www.foreigneronline.com.

A Chat With Pittsburgh's Favorite Musical Son, Joe Grushecky
Singer/Songwriter Joe Grushecky has long been considered one of music's best kept secrets, even though he's been pumping out solid tunes since the 70's both solo and with his band The Houserockers. Mind boogling, yes, but to the die-hards Joe's always been a favorite uncompromising voice of the everyman. From collaborating with friend Bruce Springsteen, to being in the trenches everyday as a teacher, to a new documentary focusing on his career, Joe talks candidly here about his musical career. I caught up with vocalist/guitarist Stephen Butler (second from left in photo) of the band Smash Palace, and he gave me the scoop about what's currently going on in the band's world. For those unfamiliar with the Philly/South Jersey based band, if you're into infectious melodies, hooks galore, and classy Beatle type pop, do yourself a favor and check these guys (and girl) out. The band's got some cool upcoming gigs and side projects. Where and what? Listen to the interview and check out www.smashpalacemusic.com to find out. Checking In With Cinderella/Naked Beggars Guitarist Jeff LaBar
I had the chance to speak to Jeff LaBar recently about the new music he's working on with his band Naked Beggars. The band is currently working on the follow-up to their "Spit It Out" CD released a couple of years back. Jeff, who as you may know also plays guitar for CInderella, was actually heading out to the studio when I hooked up with him. Because of our chat, I actually caused him to be a bit late (sorry Jeff!). Thanks to Jeff for the interview, he was a great guy to talk to. FYI - in this interview, he reveals how he learned that crazy around the neck guitar swing you may have seen him do in videos. Yeah, you don't always get the serious questions on this site...
After you listen to the interview, check Jeff out at www.nakedbeggars.net and his personal site at www.jefflabar.com.

Johnny Duke - The Next Generation of The Blues Has Arrived
Meet Johnny Duke, vocalist/lead guitarist of Johnny Duke and The Aces. Johnny Duke and The Aces are a great young blues band that I recently witnessed open for B.B. King in Philadelphia. They've got a great vibe - respectful and true to classic blues sounds, yet fresh and vibrant adding their own style to it. At the B.B. show, they won over the crowd with a mix of blues standards and original material - they even drew praise from B.B. himself. These guys are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the blues/rock world. Take a listen to my recent Q & A with Johnny, then visit the band at www.johnnydukeandtheaces.com.
